Case Study: Rheem Ambiheat Hot Water

Woodside, South Australia.

We have had the luxury of following up with this customer to review their energy usage after the installation of their new Ambiheat in mid-March this year. In this instance, we removed this customer’s 250L Rheem single-element electric storage hot water system, which had finally given up after many years of service. Traditionally these units were installed and run overnight on a reduced off-peak tarrif called the J tarrif. Unfortunately, this J tariff had already been abolished for this customer and they were paying overnight at the peak rate. Even with their quality solar system feeding into the grid during the day, this was no match for the overnight heating of the hot water system and energy usage remained high.

On installation of the new Rheem Ambiheat, we set up the new RCBO circuit breaker to run on continuous tariff, which allows us to effectively control and set the timer on the digital display to run on the Shoulder tariff hours of 10 am in the morning to 3 pm in the afternoon. This low rate tariff allows for the solar spike on the grid, designed to allow energy retailers to disperse the energy load on the grid caused by the high volume of solar feed in throughout the state. This option, coupled with the home’s individual solar system input directly feeding power into the hot water service, rather than into the grid, made for some very serious savings on both their power usage and their cost for power over the ensuing months.

This home’s total power usage for April 2022 was reduced from 400Kw/h to 100Kw/h for April 2023. This is a saving of 0.120 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions for April alone. Very impressive!!
